HPV vaccination for adults 27 to 45yrs

FDA has recently approved the HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) for adults, both men and women, aged 27 to 45 yrs. Dr Marks who is the director of FDA states that the vaccine has the potential to prevent more than 90% cases of cancers caused every year from the virus.

CDC statistics report 14 million americans are affected every year; of which 12,000 are diagnosed and 4000 die from cervical cancer. The effectiveness of Gardasil was studied by a study of approximately 3,200 women aged 27-45yrs, and were followed for 3.5 years. It was reported that Gardasil was 88% effective in preventing virus caused illnesses. The safety of the vaccine was studied in 13,000 males and females with only common reactions reported, such as pain at site of injection, swelling, redness and headaches.

CDC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HPV VACCINATION

  • If administered before age 15, then 2 doses; 0 and 6-12 months
  • If administered after age 15, then 3 doses; 0, 6, 12 months
  • The schedule for adults aged 27-45 is also 3 doses; 0, 6, 12 months
